  • Maintenance Notice: Apache 2.2 PHP 4 + PHP 5 Rollout11/19/2007 12:45 pm

    Dear [CLIENTNAME]:

As we mentioned in a previous announcement we are finally commencing our Apache 2.2 rollout.  By default we will be using PHP 4.4.7, but you also have the option of using the new PHP 5.2.5.  By January we hope to announce PHP 5 will be default on all servers.  In February or March we will be removing PHP 4 from all servers if there are no major complications.

The reason we are pushing this along so quickly is because most hosting companies have been hesitant to move to PHP 5, or even offer it as a second option.  The PHP Group announced earlier this year in July that PHP 4 is EOL (end of life) at the end of this year and there will be no further development, only major patches on a case-by-case basis until 8-8-08.

In the meantime you have the option of using either PHP 4 or PHP 5 by adding the following lines to your .htaccess file:

To jump ahead of the game and begin using PHP 5 right away to ensure compatibility use:
    AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php

To utilize PHP 4 after we switch to PHP 5 use:
    AddHandler application/x-httpd-php4 .php

In summary, tonight (11/20/07) there will be a maintenance window between 12 and 1 AM EDT.  There should be minimal downtime while we recompile everything.  It will only affect http traffic; FTP, email, etc. will continue to function as expected.

If you experience any problems with your website after the maintenance window is closed, please email support at support@inlinehosting.com.  We will be standing by to answer your questions.

    Regards,
